On Dec. 21, 2012, also known as the Winter Solstice, an ancient Mayan mythical event will occur when the earth, the sun and the center of the Milky Way galaxy become aligned. For the Mayans, it is the celebration of the end of one era and the beginning of another. But various Western interpretations have led to the conclusion that it will mark the end of the world.
- Indeed, the earth, the sun and the center of the Milky Way galaxy will align in what also is a rare astronomical occurrence. It is something that happens once every 26,000 years, but scientists are unsure of how this will affect the earth.
- The overwhelming consensus is that the ancient Mayans believed this period would usher in a great change. But whether it is spiritual or physically catastrophic is unclear.
- In astrology, the Age of Aquarius is supposed to begin at the beginning of the 21st century. It will mark a time of great change and enlightenment, where we see what we have done wrong and fix the problems.
- The ancient Mayan calendars don’t just stop with the year 2012. Inscriptions at various Mayan sites refer to future dates as far away as 4772.
- Apolinario Chile Pixtun, a Mayan elder, refutes the rumors about the doomsday theory, saying that some Mayan descendants today don’t know what 2012 is all about. Rather, these people have real concerns like food and rain.
