May 21, 2011: The End of the World?
Well, tomorrow, May 21, 2011, is supposed to be the end of the world. Wait, I thought the Mayans said it was supposed to be December 21, 2012? Either way, it gets a lot of publicity. (This post is a good example.)
End of the world not yet, says space sciences expert
If the planets are sending any message at all from the cosmos, it’s that earthlings should stop worrying and just enjoy the show. The conjunction of Earth’s heavenly neighbors—Mercury, Venus, Mars and Jupiter—is a regular phenomenon attributed to their normal orbit around the sun, not a cosmic conspiracy that signals the end of the world as doomsayers fear, a space sciences official has said.
Before the world ends in 2012, Mayan exhibition comes to Canada
A collection of almost 250 Mayan artifacts, including objects never seen outside of Mexico, will arrive at the Canadian Museum of Civilization in 2012, the year that the Mayan calendar predicts the end of the world.
Your Weekly Apocalypse Warning
There’s no denying that we live in dangerous times. Earthquakes, oil spills, governmental shut downs, and Rebecca Black- these are all signs that life as we know it may be rapidly ending. We’ve all heard the theories of the impending apocalypse.
Skynet is about to attack. Maybe
Thursday, 21 April 2011 is the day when Skynet, villainous super-computer from the Terminator films, is due to launch its assault on mankind. Terminator director James Cameron alerted the world to the significance of the date with a tweet saying: “Instead of machines taking over, we have the very real threat of global warming.”
World ends May 21?
Maybe you’ve seen the signs of the apocalypse. One was spotted in New York. Literally. The kind with lettering. Next to a sidewalk squatter, not far from the Ripley’s Believe It or Not museum. This wasn’t a vague the-end-is-nigh warning. This guy knew when: May 21, 2011.
The end of the world as we know it
Earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamis, floods and mudslides — the scale and frequency of natural disasters in recent times has not only put the world on edge but also has saints and sinners repenting in anticipation of the end of times.
Top astronomers warn the world could end within 90 years
The end of the world is nigh. That’s what top astronomers will claim during a debate to end the 2011 Edinburgh International Science Festival. Lord Martin Rees, the Astronomer Royal, believes civilisation has only a 50 per cent chance of surviving to 2100 without suffering a man-made catastrophe.
The phenomenon of 2012
Those hail storms and snow showers at the beginning of this month gave my sister the heebie-jeebies. “The world is ending, you know,” she said. “This is just a warm-up for 2012.” I shook my head and chuckled. I didn’t know that my sister believed in the 2012 theory.
Armageddon? Been there, done that.
What would happen if the world ended right on schedule? Suppose the Rapture came on May 21st or the end of the Mayan Calendar on December 21st really is the end – do you think someone would notice?
