Kathryn Reese-Taylor on the Mayans and 2012

Doomsday and 2012. You’ve probably heard rumblings, if not more, about a supposed connection. Many people point to an ancient Mayan calendar – made 1,200 years ago – as the source of the rumors.

May 21, 2011: The End of the World?

Well, tomorrow, May 21, 2011, is supposed to be the end of the world. Wait, I thought the Mayans said it was supposed to be December 21, 2012? Either way, it gets a lot of publicity. (This post is a good example.)

Before the world ends in 2012, Mayan exhibition comes to Canada

A collection of almost 250 Mayan artifacts, including objects never seen outside of Mexico, will arrive at the Canadian Museum of Civilization in 2012, the year that the Mayan calendar predicts the end of the world.

This is the way the world ends

This is the way the world ends

For years we’ve been getting used to the idea that the world will end in 2012, as predicted by the Mayan calendar. However, Christian fundamentalists, in an effort to increase their share of the loony market, have now gone one better than the priests of Quetzalcóatl.

The phenomenon of 2012

The phenomenon of 2012

Those hail storms and snow showers at the beginning of this month gave my sister the heebie-jeebies. “The world is ending, you know,” she said. “This is just a warm-up for 2012.” I shook my head and chuckled. I didn’t know that my sister believed in the 2012 theory.

Ten Signs of the Apocalypse

Ten Signs of the Apocalypse

My insomnia is back, and I think I know why. As we edge deeper into the year 2011, I can’t help but dwell on the fact that it won’t be long until 2012 is upon us. According to doomsday prophets, the Mayan calendar , the Holy Bible and a rather so-so John Cusack film, we, apparently, have a date with destiny.

UFO Conference explores beliefs, alien abductions

The 23rd Annual Ozark UFO Conference convened this weekend at the Inn of the Ozarks and had a few big-ticket speakers on everything from 2012 and metaphysics to the abductee/ET contact phenomenon. John Major Jenkins has published several books about his independent research into the Mayan culture and the 2012 prophecies. He has done extensive research for the last 30 years, taking several trips to Central America.

Slice of Life

Slice of Life

It’s been many years that a good deal of the world’s population has been well aware of the 12/21/12 prophecies for planet Earth. They are not exactly what one could call pleasant events to look forward to. The whole idea is scaring the very souls of many.

He’s proud of cutting the budget at expense of poor and at no cost to corporate America. What will Obama say next? I was considering having myself dusted with ash and measured for sackcloth last week, so many are the current predictions of impending apocalypse.

Mayans, 2012 and the end of the world

Some believe that the ancient Mayans have predicted that our world will end in 2012. I tend to agree with them. There was a rather adolescent disaster movie made a couple years ago that attempted to capitalize with a particularly traumatic version of the approaching date. But besides the special effect of a huge wave cresting over the Himalayas, silencing the world’s highest bell, the film was a dud in my opinion.
