Sign of the Apocalypse? Bunker Sales Increase After Japan Earthquake
In times of natural disaster, war and nuclear fears — not to mention the Mayan calendar predicting that the world will end in 2012 — it’s only natural that people would consider buying space in luxury fallout shelters. Right?
Teotwawki coming soon to a region near you
Teotwawki – or The End of the World as We Know It – is a perennially popular subject (and has been for millennia despite the failure of so many eschatological forecasts dating back into prehistory) which was given a huge boost in popularity with the advent of Christianity and the dubious prophecies contained in The Book of Revelations.
Is the end near?
For those of you living under a rock (I know it’s dark under there, but squint and you should be able to read this type), there’s been some rumblings going on about the end of the world, as in it may be near. Haven’t you heard? Supposedly the Mayan calendar quits at Dec. 21, 2012. That has led more than a few to “research” and declare that yes, indeed, all life on planet Earth will end on that date.
Out in the city: is this the end of my world?
Has no one else seen the film 2012? Is this not what is happening before our very eyes? I found watching the film stressful, it struck a fear inside me that I didn’t like, nor did I sleep that night. I fret about having to pack up my stuff and head off to find some ark in the Himalayas as the world falls apart around me. I am hoping that the Mayans and their stupid calendar were wrong.
Calif. Pastor: End of the World Is Near, Really
Every generation has cried “the end of the world is near.” Yet “here we are still,” noted one SouthernCalifornia pastor. “Haven’t we heard this all before?” Greg Laurie acknowledged on Sunday. “Every generation … that has thought it was the generation that would see the Lord’s return has been wrong because he didn’t come, did he?”
NASA Response to Crazy 2012 Claims
NASA JPL “Reality Check” on all those wacky ideas surrounding the upcoming shift in the ancient Mayan calendar. Our favorite is the planet “Nibiru” that’s said to be hurtling into the solar system on its way to Earth.
The melancholic West
IT is worth remembering that Western civilisation has declined and fallen once before. The first version of the West, Western Civilisation 1.0, arose in the so-called Fertile Crescent stretching from the Nile Valley to the confluence of the Euphrates and the Tigris, and reached its twin peaks with Athenian democracy and the Roman Empire.
What happens if the world doesn’t end?
Speaking of dates with meanings, or no meanings, another person with too much idle time has predicted that the end of days will arrive not in 2012 but on May 21, 2011. Harold Camping, a biblical scholar and host of a Christian radio station, says that Hollywood and the Mayans have it all wrong and Judgment Day is earlier than many assumed.
A look at the ways the world could end
Think you’ve got a prediction for when and how the world will end? Get in line. A caravan of RVs is now touring the country to warn people about the end of the world (they say it will happen May 21), but they’re hardly the first ones to embark on such a mission.
End of world ahead of schedule
There have been some wild rumors going around largely based on the fact that an ancient Mayan calendar finishes a 5,000 year countdown next year and that the world is going to end in 2012. Well, I’m afraid that I have some disturbing news for you — it might happen even sooner than that. We may run out of time on May 21, 2011, to be exact.
